Day 29: What are you searching for?
I’m reading these two titles simultaneously: Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May and Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. My present-day Health/Work/Play/Love dashboard dragged me out of denial.
The distinction offered by author Glennon Doyle’s sister in their We Can Do Hard Things podcast between rest/work, play/depression is eye-opening. Organizing and styling my home makes me feel good, but the productivity factor sets it apart from fun. I achieve the high during my runs, but it’s a by-product of taking care of my cardiovascular system and mental state. I revel in Swedish-inspired massages, but I receive them for an outcome and my body’s emotional and physical maintenance, not for pleasure.
Key moments from “Fun: What the hell is it and why do we need it?” (Spotify): 35:33 and 15:15.
I do think I’m onto something in dance, however. Music lifts my body from the ground up to its high branch where we meld together, swaying in the same wind that comes from Somewhere Else. Today it’s an Odesza remix.
