Day 6: On death
AJK: What was the first funeral you attended? Do you think it gets easier? How do you cherish and honor a loved one?
I think it can feel easier over time, for those who choose it to.
I was just a child when I attended my great aunt’s funeral and family deaths peppered my teenage years and 20s.
Between multiple cities I’ve called home, divorce, job loss and naturally growing apart from different friends and lovers, I’ve been fortunate to experience so many comings-and-goings of people and circles of people, that I’ve gained a rich understanding of impermanence. I honor and cherish those I love simply by being present with them, learning how to listen deeply, and by pouring love into them when I’m with them. To give any less is a disservice to the time we are given.
Tilda Swinton was in conversation with reporter Meredith Blake on her recent film and shared a perspective in alignment with my own on our mortality.
